RISING STAR AWARD RECOGNIZES TOMORROW'S  LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS TODAY

Thaddeus P. Martin IV is just 32 years old yet he has already  been named Lawyer of the Year by the state bar association Young Lawyers  division and "Super Lawyer" by Washington Law and Politics.

A 1998 graduate of Seattle University law school, Martin became a partner at Gordon, Thomas, Honywell, Malanca, Peterson, & Daheim, the region's oldest and largest law firm, in 2003 after just five years making him the youngest attorney  ever granted that status in the 110-year history of the firm.

His practice includes the areas of personal injury, government negligence, wrongful death actions and racial discrimination. He was the first associate  ever to bring more than $1 million in business during his first year.

Martin earned a bachelor's degree in social work from University of  Washington in 1995 before attending law school. He was probation counselor for King County Department of Youth services in 1994-95 and interned with his future law firm from 1996 to 1998. He also was a law clerk with the Consumer Protection  Division of the state Attorney General's Office in 1997.

He joined the Tacoma law firm in 1998 and four years later was co-counsel in obtaining the largest personal injury verdict in Pierce County Superior Court  history.

Martin holds professional associations with the American Bar Association, the  Washington State Trial Lawyers Association and the Washington State Bar Association. He's a member of Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association Young Lawyer's Division and Pierce County Minority Bar Association.

He was featured speaker at the 2002 convention of Washington State Trial Lawyers and presented at a legal seminar in Barcelona, Spain.

Despite professional success, he continues providing pro bono legal services to those in need, serves on the alumni board of Seattle University and speaks to  numerous youth groups in the community, providing a visible symbol of what can be accomplished, as well as serving as a mentor.

Martin is described by his nominator as “a big guy with a big heart.” He is a  professional and always on the ball in his work, but always kind to people, according to those who work in association with his practice. Colleagues and co  workers say they think the world of him and admire how modest he is considering  the extraordinary things he has accomplished.

He is also called a loving husband and dynamic father of three children. Martin and his family live in Tacoma.
